Obituary for Tony Ponce

Anthony Ponce died peacefully of natural causes at age 87 on Jan. 25, 2015 at the end of a long, happy life.

Born to Spanish immigrants in Cupertino, he grew up in Cupertino and Sunnyvale, helping his parents on their ranch where they grew apricots, cherries, walnuts and prunes. He graduated from Fremont High School and enlisted in the Navy. After his service, he worked for Pacific Bell for over 40 years.

In 1950 he married the love of his life, Dolores, and raised a family in Sunnyvale. A generous, sociable, fun-loving man, Tony was active in the Bayview Seniors, Cervantes club and Telephone Pioneers of America, volunteered with the Cub Scouts, and coached Little League. Among his hobbies were camping & RVing, line dancing, and ham radio.

He was a caring brother to Emily Dejea, and a devoted and loving father to Kathleen Reilly (Tom), David Ponce, and Robert Ponce (Lisa). He is also survived by his grandchildren David Reilly, Meagan Reilly, Melissa Reilly-Diakun, Darren Ponce, Cristina Canete, and Justin Ponce, their spouses, and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial was held at the Sunnyvale Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries on Monday, February 2, 2015. If desired, donations can be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org/donate.
